Janice Bryant Howroyd: Meet the First Black Women to Operate a Billion Dollar Business (Video)

In 1978, after moving to California from North Carolina, Janice Bryant Howroyd decided to go into business for herself.  Opening her first official Act-1 office in Beverly Hills, CA, utilizing a small office space that didn’t even have a fax machine.

Her company, The Act-1 Group is now the largest privately held, workforce solutions company that was founded by a woman. According to Black Enterprise Magazine, Mrs. Howroyd is the first Melanated women to operate a company that generates over $1 billion in annual revenue. 

The Act-1 Group has become an award-winning international Talent and Talent Technology enterprise with multiple divisions operating in 19 countries with over 17,000 clients and 2,600 employees’ worldwide. Mrs. Howroyd is on a long list of great Melanated women who have made considerable contributions to society.
