Black Fatherhood: Trials & Tribulations, Testimony & Triumph By: Khalid Akil White

As we all know, in today’s society, there are many negative stereotypes surrounding black men. You’ve heard them right? We’re violent, drug addicted, lazy, uneducated good-for-nothing fathers who have a difficult time keeping a job and supporting our families.

However, in reality, none of that can be further from the truth. Our communities are full of fathers that do everything in their power to be an asset to their family, as well as their communities. This is what makes Black Fatherhood: Trials & Tribulations, Testimony & Triumph such an enjoyable read.

Dr. Khalid White does a masterful job blending relatable heartfelt stories with the raw emotion that goes with fatherhood. Furthermore, the fathers in the book provide a broad range of perspectives and insight regarding the struggles and injustices that the black man as well as the black family, still experience in this society today.

At times, fatherhood can leave you questioning yourself. Did I do this right? Did I do that wrong? Am I living up to my child’s expectations? I‘m sure most of us have experienced moments where we’ve second-guessed our decision-making process. After reading this book something became evident to me, the doubts and uncertainties that accompany parenting are apart of the process.

The key is to never stop looking for answers, never stop putting your best foot forward. In my opinion, even though this book approaches fatherhood from a black male perspective, all walks of life can not only enjoy the book but learn from the courageous stories that are told in it.

Dr. Khalid White also filmed a compelling documentary with the same men from the book, check out the trailer below:!!
