Things are considerably different for our children. Growing up in the 21st century has provided this generation with a level of accessibility that we could merely dream of when we were kids. The advancements in technology that have taken place over the last 20 years have put an abundance of information at their fingertips.
Even though technology has opened the door to a wealth of knowledge and the ability to acquire information that they wouldn’t typically have access to, it’s still a very slippery slope. As a parent, the question quickly becomes…how much is too much? The only way we can combat the influx of new information presented to our children on a daily basis is by establishing boundaries.
In my opinion, these boundaries should be determined by your child‘s level of responsibility. If your child struggles in school or exhibits disciplinary problems at home, allowing them to still use their cell phone or any other form of technology that they enjoy can be counterproductive and ultimately hurt them more in the long run. So, this weekend, take a step back and observe how responsible your child has been lately. You never know, it may be time for an updated set of boundaries.
