Growing up in the inner city, it was difficult to understand the nuances associated with living in an economically deprived community. Drug abuse, violence, teenage pregnancy, and heavy police presence were all a part of our everyday lives. Most of the young men in my neighborhood resorted to living on the other side of the law to provide for themselves and their family. Everyone in our community didn’t have the wherewithal to avoid the systemic traps aimed at the black community.
So, because of that many people had to suffer the consequences of their ignorance. Whether it was spending time in jail, involving themselves in violence, or the ultimate consequence…….death. That’s what makes The Autobiography of Malcolm X such an important piece of literature. Reading the story of a young man who spent his childhood immersed into street activity as a way of life, to become one of the most important and influential figures of the 20th century.
The evolution that took place in his life serves as the quintessential example of what can be done when you change your way of thinking. This book is a great read for everybody but especially the young men in our community who may feel they can’t rise above their current circumstances. Malcolm x was living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to.
