Booker T Washington was one of the most influential African-America men of the 19th century. In 1881, he founded the Tuskegee Institute, an all-black school in Alabama that focused on industrial and moral education. Even though he openly expressed that African American’s should “acquiesce to segregation” he secretly contributed funds to the legal fight against Jim Crow laws, lynchings and the overall mistreatment of African Americans.
