Let’s face it, relationships are difficult to maintain. Regardless of your background or the type of household you grew up in, there are going to be challenges that we must overcome. So, the question then becomes, what are the distinguishing factors that allow you to remain happy and content in your relationship through the ups and downs.
Naturally, there must be love, communication, compassion, and even empathy to create a well-rounded situation. However, one of the most significant factors I feel gets overlooked is friendship. Yes, you heard me right!! Friendship!! You and your partner not being friends will make it very difficult to establish a long-lasting relationship. There’s no doubt that over time, both of you will evolve and become different versions of yourself and maintaining a healthy friendship will make adjusting to that new reality that much easier.
In my opinion, all the factors we discussed earlier won’t matter much if you don’t have a base that’s rooted in friendship. At the end of the day, it’s important that your partner is someone that you genuinely like to be around and have common interests with. If your relationship is based on intimacy or sexual attraction you won’t last long because those things fade over time. So, make sure when selecting a partner, you base it on substance and not anything superficial.
