Madison Washington: Meet The Free Man Who Led A Successful Slave Revolt (Video)

Madison Washington was an American enslaved cook who instigated a slave revolt attempting to free his wife. In 1841, while on board of the brig Creole which was transporting 134 other slaves from Virginia for sale in New Orleans. On November 7th, 1841 Washington led 17 other slaves into rebellion.

They eventually took control of the ship and Washington took over as commander and directed them to Nassau which was under British control. Great Britain had abolished slavery in 1833 so despite America’s protest, Great Britain declared the slaves free under there laws and refused to return them.
