Jones, who was Crawford’s good friend and roommate, and Jones’ boyfriend, Barron Brantley, are accused of strangling Crawford and dumping her body at a local park on Oct. 31. Both have been charged in her murder.
A judge has denied bond for Jones, arguing the 21-year-old was a flight risk because, hours after she is thought to have killed Crawford, she allegedly made plans to withdraw from college and move back to her home state of Michigan, Atlanta station WSB-TV reported.
Crawford and Jones attended Clark Atlanta University together. Jones did follow through on withdrawing from the university according to court documents obtained by WSBTV causing the judge to believe she wouldn’t return for trial.
Crawford, a senior at the Atlanta HBCU, was reported missing by relatives Nov. 1 after they said they hadn’t heard from her in several days. Her body was discovered in a DeKalb County park Nov. 8.
Jones is accused of smothering her roommate “with a black trash bag until Crawford stopped breathing and was deceased,” per an arrest affidavit. Her boyfriend is also alleged to have strangled the victim with his hands.
Jones’ and Crawford’s friendship had recently hit a rift.
Days before her disappearance, Crawford filed a police report accusing Brantley, Jones’ boyfriend, of sexual assault, including unwanted kissing and touching. She said the three of them had been drinking at the near-campus apartment she shared with Jones, 21, when the reported assault occurred.
Crawford told police she blacked out and woke up partially naked with ripped panties.
On Thursday, officials confirmed Brantley’s DNA was found inside the victim, adding they had evidence to prove Jones had tried covering up the rape. Crawford’s roommate even tried to convince the victim’s family that there was no rape.
Jones, 21, remains in custody at the Fulton County Jail. On Friday, Jones waived her preliminary hearing set to take place today. Her next court date has been scheduled for February 10th, 2020.
Her alleged accomplice, Brantley, is expected in court Friday for a bond and preliminary hearing.
